Mukesh Ambani’s JioFiber is out now and the ambitious broadband network is likely to sway customers of PSU telecom firms MTNL and BSNL away. “There could be a churn, especially for customers who are paying in the range of Rs 500-600 a month,” Nitin Soni, director at Fitch Ratings, said in an interview to CNBC TV18. It seems that decks have been cleared for the administrative allotment of 4G spectrum worth `20,000 crore to BSNL/MTNL as solicitor general (SG) Tushar Mehta is understood to have given a go-ahead to a department of telecommunications (DoT) proposal regarding the same. Sources say the DoT had sought legal opinion from SG after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) refused to offer its views regarding the matter, terming it an administrative issue. Reliance Jio may have big plans for its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services — to be commercially launched on September 5 — but analysts feel the launch of the new service would not be as disruptive for the incumbents as Jio’s mobile services had been when launched three years ago on the same date. New Delhi: Cash-strapped Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is facing a challenge in crediting staff salaries for this month on August 30, a senior official admitted on Friday. The official, who did not wish to be named, said that while the telecom company is generating monthly revenue of about Rs 1,400 crore, there are certain liabilities, including interest payments, which have to be taken into account.
