The Synfuels Plant is the only commercial-scale coal gasification plant in the United States that manufactures natural gas. Dakota Gasification Company is also the cleanest energy plant operating in the state of North Dakota, according to a comparison of emissions data available from the North Dakota Department of Health. The Great Plains Synfuels Plant harnesses the abundant coal resources underlying the North Dakota prairie. The gasification process transforms more than 6 million tons of coal into more than 54 billion cu. ft. of natural gas annually, which is then used to supply the Eastern US.
