| ActiveState Software Inc |  | The company offers tools for the Perl, PHP, Python, Tcl, and XSLT programming and scripting languages. It targets customers in the computer, telecommunications, finance, insurance, pharmaceutical, and defense industries. Founded in 1997, ActiveState was acquired in September 2003 for about $23 million in cash by Sophos, a UK-based security software firm. Three years later employees of ActiveState (with funding from Pender Financial Group) formed ActiveState Software, which acquired ActiveState's assets from Sophos for about $2.3 million.
