| Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps LLP |  | Moses A. Luce started his law practice and joined the bankers, builders and visionaries who shaped San Diego, California's first city. He drafted the first City Charter. The organizational meeting for the San Diego Public Library was held in his office. Moses rode the economic boom of the 1870s, first as an attorney and then as Vice-President for Santa Fe Railroad, to become Postmaster and County Judge. Born in Illinois, he served in the military during the Civil War and was awarded the Medal of Honor. He practiced law as one of the county's leading citizens for nearly 50 years until 1922. Edgar A. Luce, Sr. was the youngest son and the sixth offspring of Moses Luce. He graduated from Stanford University in 1905 and, without ever having taken a law course, passed the state bar exam that same year. His father promptly made him a partner in the law firm, where he practiced prior to his active political career as Deputy City Attorney, State Senator, and Judge of the Superior Court for San Diego, which lasted until 1925.
